“Making the mundane exciting one film at a time”

Deena A. Alsaweer is a film director who started in content creation a decade ago, she holds an M.A. in Film/TV from SCAD and is recognized as a Fulbright Scholar. Deena is an award-winning Writer & Director, and Co-Chair on MAC-CAM’s Board of Directors where they do impactful work to cultivate an environment of growth for immigrant and refugee artists in Canada. Throughout her career, Deena has successfully conceptualized, directed, and coordinated projects, collaborating with notable companies including Yamaha, TVOkids' ‘Polkaroo! Reads,’ Bell Fibe TV1's ‘Teenage Fever, and ‘Being Black in Canada (presented by Netflix). Her portfolio extends to creating content for EPKs for film & television, such as Netflix's ‘Geek Girl (starring Emily Carey; House of the Dragon, Wonder Woman) and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries' ‘True Justice: Family Ties,’ (starring Katherine McNamara; Shadowhunters, Arrow) amongst others.

'Stitches' is Deena’s latest short film that is being developed as part of her 2024 Toronto Palestine Film Festival residency about a Palestinian tailor dedicated to spreading joy using his wedding dresses. Her 2022 screenplay, 'Dead & Alive', won the Best Screenplay award at the Digi60 Filmmakers Festival. In 2021, Deena’s short screenplay, 'Agent Hala,’ won a nation-wide competition held by the French Embassy in Bahrain, which also earned her a screenwriting mentorship.

Deena recently edited 'Ayam Zaman,' an official selection at the 2024 Toronto Arab Film Festival. Collaborating with CBC Creator Network, she edited 'Good Nose,' a documentary on Persian beauty standards, and is currently editing a new documentary on different cultural beauty rituals.

She is the creator of 'Blender!,' an Arts Network Ottawa-supported event fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among artists. Deena also teaches a youth class, 'Acting on Camera,' at the Ottawa School of Theatre. Her upcoming projects include her debut feature film and a workplace webseries advocating for the public library community.

Dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices, Deena continues to champion organic, genuine and authentic diversity in the industry.
